Something to say about saying something for yourself.
What is the most striking thing about our current president over the past few?
If your answer was that he is black, than you lose. Many people have dubbed me a racist individual due to the admittedly controversial stuff I have said (and will say) on this site numerous times. Regardless of the fact that I was saying these things to make a point, it rings true that I was in fact saying them, and that they were in fact said. The previous statement was not as redundant as it at first sounds. Yes, I said racist things to make a point, not to offend people, but if people were in fact offended, than the things that I said were quite literally offensive. Do I now regret having said them? No. I don’t regret having said them for the very reason that I said them in the first place. The fact that racist comments are offensive is entirely and completely because the people who are offended by them, choose so to be. Allow me to provide an example.
Apple.
Chances are very slim (unless you are like me and really fucking hate all of a certain company’s products) that the above word offended you, and if it did, you need to get a life. This is because you didn’t allow that word to represent something that caused you offense.
Bitch.
This word may or may not have offended you. In fact, this word does have two meanings, and if taken lightly, you can look around the offense at the true meaning of the word and thereby not allow yourself to be offended.
Nigger.
Now we come to the word that has probably been on the tip of your tongue since this entry began. The fact that there is almost no friendly association that we can match this word to immediately sets off a red flag within us that causes us to choose to be offended by this word.
Each of those three words are equally offensive if one or more people were offended by either of them. If one strange fellow was offended by the word apple, it makes it (by definition) no less offensive than the word nigger, no matter how many people it offends.
There is more to my direction here, however. The main reason that I chose to blog today was to stress something. If you are really against racial profiling, if you are truly attempting to end racism once and for all, you can’t even so much as acknowledge its existence. Sure, people who disagree with me will argue that you must be aware of a situation in order to fight it, and “ignoring the problem is not the solution” but syntax suggests quite the contrary. What exactly does racism mean? Racism is when somebody is discriminating between races, is this correct? Well, what does discriminating mean? Last I checked, it has to do with associating individual characteristics between to objects. In other words, by so much as admitting that there is such thing as different races, makes you by the books, racist.
To wrap this whole thing back around to my introit, it is to say that anybody who says “our country has taken a great step forward in eliminating racism by electing the first black president” is not only being racist themselves, but is being extraordinarily contradictory.
P.S. When trying to speak out for civil rights, please, please, please do so in a manner that doesn’t make you look like a complete fucking moron:
Until next time, good luck with life.
Days since last day off: 16
Days since last went to gym: 2
Days since last ignorant customer: 0
Days this year that life’s been good to me: 36

you really must saying nigger…even in the mind..
I think its good obama is quiet. the world is getting on with things
In some sort of convoluted way, I am *pretty sure* I agree with you!
meh, i just wanna groove to CSS and Bonde Do Role with no care in the world
I love the hammer time box!
I do agree with you that something offensive is only offensive if the person who is taking offense chooses to do so, but I really think that nigger is simply a derogative term. Bitch means female dog and Apple means fruit, but nigger simply is a degrading term. =/
@TheWorldsOfficialCritic - what u said…
I have a draem!
Hmmmm … as far as I can tell, people have a choice whether they are offended by something only when there is a choice between word meanings.
Hence: Apple can mean the fruit, the company, or an individual computer. Bitch can mean female dog, to complain, or a nasty person of either sex (these days).
However, I don’t see any such choice attached to the “N”-word, or even the “C”-word (no, not Corn Flakes, either). Both words are just intrinsically offensive because of the meanings attached to them.
Moving back a bit on the “Offensive Scale” – what about Slut? Where is the choice about being offended? What meanings are we offered the choice of? In the modern vernacular, there is only one meaning. And it’s pretty offensive if used in a serious manner.
So, no, I’m sorry I can’t agree with you on this one. Some words are just awful, and we shouldn’t toss them around like they are no more important than a Frisbee.
I disagree.
Like the other commenters have pointed out, the N-word doesn’t have the same connotations as “apple” and “bitch”–is a history lesson needed? I think not. When you have a term that’s been used for centuries to degrade a human–and make them feel and think they were somehow less than a human with equal rights–it isn’t something that can be shrugged off as “You’re only offended because you choose to be offended, and I’m saying these words to make a point,”
Um. No.
The N-word still grates on my nerves; it irritates me to hear its more casual term used among black males. The whole “Let’s keep using this word until it isn’t offensive anymore, let’s introduce it into the African American community” obviously hasn’t been working, and it’s very hurtful to hear other races use it as well.
I’m not too blinded by my race to see the point you’re trying to make. But I don’t think it’s very well made using your examples.
@Madoushi_Shoujo - first of all, I specifically stated that the “N-word” doesn’t have the same connotations, but the fact remains that it is still just a word.
The word itself is not offensive, it is the meaning of the word that is offensive.
@CanadianBroad - The same goes here, no single word is offensive, only the meaning of the words. It’s just like when people say “darn” instead of “damn”. Their meanings are the same, therefor they are not saying any less offensive of a word.
Too true…
I guess my problem with this argument is that no one can claim to be impervious to being offended.
I have seen white people come unglued over terms like “cracker” and “whitey”. Catholics don’t appreciate being called “papists”. Irish Americans dislike epithets such as “mick”.
Wouldn’t it be fun to call Bill O’Reilly a papist mick cracker? Not really, but when I hear him complain about political correctness and how irritating it is, I wonder how he would feel… papist mick cracker.
The ever-hated political correctness is what keeps people from calling us the very things WE don’t want to be called- whoever “we” happens to be. I’m female. I’d thank others to not call me “bitch” in casual passing.
I agree that no word should be completely obliterated- there’s a meaning behind every word in existence, that’s why it exists. But words are powerful, too.
@Madoushi_Shoujo - Funny how a word sometimes loses strength with time- “damn”, for instance, used to be a very strong curse- while other words’ meanings remain intact. I guess nobody can change words on purpose.
@ClockworkBunny - I am Catholic and I actually see nothing offensive about being called a “papist”. Not to say that I don’t see your point, I’m just not exactly sure how that word is suposed to be derogatory…
@RockOfEadie - “Papist” is used to indicate that your loyalty is to the Pope and not to God. As opposed to calling you a “Christian”.
That’s where the offense is.
the only reason I’d be upset with being called a cracker is because calling a black person a nigger can get my ass shot. I know lots of niggers that I call niggers and if they wanna call me a cracker, that’s cool. However, the fact that black ppl can call each other niggers (or niggahz, if you will) and no one else can, is racist in itself. If the term is truly derogatory in all senses, then many many many many many black people are racists against themselves.
p.s. thegreateadie is a fucking nigger, but he’s a cool fucking nigger, so it’s all good
-Patrick-
And I’d like you to know that I also have both a deram and a draem.
@CanadianBroad - The way I see Papist is that we are loyal to the Pope, not that we choose the Pope over God, but the fact is that God stated that anything that Peter (the Pope) said would be made true in heaven, therefor it is all one in the same and no choice need even be made.
