The “I don’t subscribe to any label” label
The other day, we watched the abysmally weird and dissapointing film “Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist” simply because there was no better movie to watch at the time. At some point during this movie, the character Nick delivered the only line from the flick that I can actually remember. “I don’t subscribe to any label.” It wasn’t that the line itself was memorable. Hell, if I had a nickel for every time I’ve heard that, I’d be spending my time lounging around, writing half-ass scripts like that one and getting paid big bucks to do it. But this post is not for the purpose of providing a review of the movie (although, I assure you, it wasn’t good). Instead I am here to explain to you how I throw up in my mouth a little bit every time I hear somebody say a phrase along those lines. Little do they realize, they are immediately sliding themselves into a group. First of all, it would take me only five seconds to determine that Nick was a straight-edge indie kid. There is no escaping that. But even deeper than this, is the fact that the people that file this claim are doing it because they somehow think that that is going to make them cooler, or even better or above everyone else. And let me tell you kiddies, the momment you think that something you say automatically makes you cooler that other people, is the momment you fall rather permanently from that pedistal.
Until next time, good luck with life.

We all fall into some category, whether we want to or not.
@wherethefishlives - Echo. And, if there isn’t a category yet, sooner or later that super special thing, that uber unique clique will get pigeonholed one way or another into its own little (non)exclusive label.
We’re all living in a material world. And I am just a confused girl.
See, exactly why I say down with labels all together! lol…..But yea, I agree, all the “I don’t fit into a label i’m unique” people are all in the same group, duh.
Doing something may make you “cool” for a while, just like popularity, but people who really are cool are those who care about people regardless of their status, socially or otherwise, and don’t let that affect their interactions at all.
Heck, even I know I fall into a category. It’s one of those weird ones that has twelve other category names put together with slashes, but it’s still a category. No one can get away from them. I kind of want to punch people in the face when they say the are “non-conformists” and dress just like the rest of the “non-conformists”…
My penis made me go see Nick and Norah’s because some womenfolk invited me. Both me and my penis were disappointed in the night as a whole.
I can’t imagine agreeing with you more! I mean, if I subscribed to a label, it certainly wouldn’t be that one…. lol (fyi, I’m not entirely good at sarcasm)
I read the book a couple of years ago. I don’t remember much of it but it was alright [I remember thinking that much haha]. I saw the previews to the movie and I decided it was totally different, and that it didn’t look terribly good. So yeah. And everyone falls into a category whether they want to/realize it or not
Labels work better when we stick them on other people instead of ourselves = D
People don’t need to announce what they “are” their actions usually do more than enough.
Thats true.

Refusing to subscribe to any label means someone has just subscribed to the label of refusing to subscribe to any label.
…Wait, how do you subscribe to a label? You send it a check for $20 and it mails you a CD every month for a year?
why didn’t you see Quarantine like a normal person?
@ClockworkBunny - Ditto that! Even the act of saying, “I don’t follow ____ or conform to it,” places you into the category of people who do the exact same thing…thus fitting snugly into another label. There’s no escape!! *paranoid glance*
I agree. Completely.

Ouch. That fall hurt a lot. My pedestal was pretty high up there. Damn.
I agree wholeheartedly. I find most of these people to be snobby teenagers.

Update!
Go see Bangkok Dangerous and be a man again.
Next on the list: “How To Lose Friends and Alienate People”, “Saw V” (to complete the damn series already), and “The Ruins”.
whats happenin
You better not be dead or something.
If enough people got together and had no label, wouldn’t the “no label” actually be one? Food for thought.
